Politicians Staging an Assault on Atheism

Well not quite.....

I just noticed two things in the blogs today.

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair spoke at a university to a conference of Christians and Muslims and said that they need to unite to fight a war against the "secularist agenda". Just what the hell is a secularist agenda? The only thing that comes to my mind is justice and freedom for all, regardless of race, religion, gender, preference or anything else. A war against secularism is a war against freedom. Tony Blair is an imbecile, and is morally vacuous.

PZ Myers over at Pharyngula has a post about a recent speech of Obama's where he said "We are one nation under God. We may call that God different names, but we are one nation." Which is a shame, considering that in his inauguration speech he made a minor mention that non-believers were Americans too. It seems the U.S.A. will have to wait a while longer before they have a President that isn't simply a puppet to the faithful and decides to represent ALL of his citizens.

I can't wait till the day when Politicians get their snouts out of religious excrement and when religions stop eating from the gargantuan trough that is tax-payers money.

  1. As much as I would like to see that day also, I don't think it will come to fruition in our lifetime. The process will have momentum, but it will take restructuring from the foundation up (education). I am a high school math teacher so I see how students who are extremely intelligent believe their parents without question. But they regularly open their minds to me. As much as I would like to take a day out of the school week to lightly challenge their beliefs and why they believe them, it is a fine line.

  2. Where I live in New Zealand it is pretty much electoral suicide to be an out-spoken Christian, but the politicians are extremely hesitant to say that they don't believe in god either. Our current Prime Minister and our former one are no doubt atheists, but when speaking to religious audiences pander to them like crazy, trying not to alienate them. In 2006 around 35% of New Zealanders chose 'no religion' on the census though, so the scenario is hugely different to the U.S.

  3. I can't understand why NZ still has their godgobbing national anthem.
As an Atheist it would make me sick to the stomach to have to go through that rubbish every time I represented my country in anything that uses the anthem to start procedings.
